Great Urswick, with its two characterful pubs and restaurant, is a hidden gem, a lovely village just two miles to the south of Ulverston. Along with its neighbour, Little Urswick, they lie on opposite sides of the same tarn. The tarn is a wonderful wildlife habitat with a whole host of water birds occupying its sheltered corner. Birkrigg Stone Circle is one of several prehistoric settlement sites in the surrounding countryside. Locally, the start of the Haematite and Cumbrian Way footpaths can be found. Nearby Ulverston is an ancient market town, which still holds a street market every Thursday and Saturday. Facilities include a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants, a cinema and a leisure centre. All of the attractions of the Lake District National Park are easily reached. The Furness Coast boasts sandy beaches and good birdwatching. Windermere and Coniston are within easy reach, and nearby family attractions include the Haverthwaite and Lakeside Steam Railway, the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Muncaster Castle and the Aquarium of the Lakes.

"We stayed here at the end of June, and the owner has left all the amenities you could need for your stay (all apart from food as you'd expect). There is free WiFi, TV, DVD with a selection for your entertainment and some books. Tea, Coffee etc are all provided too. Besides that there is a decent DAB clock radio, Hoover, Dishwasher, Washing machine, gas cooker, microwave etc - nothing that hasn't been left out. The place is spotless and it is close to a decent pub that serves good food (and huge fish and chips). A lot of the attractions are all within about 40 minutes drive away and in my opinion, The best supermarket in the world is 10 minutes drive away (Booth's). "

"Stayed here for ! week in June with my wife, and we were very pleased with our choice. The cottage was in a quiet location, was comfortable and had nearly everything one could ask for ( a light over the shower room mirror please). It makes a good base for exploring southern Lakeland and the local pub is 100 yards away ( but you wouldn't know it). There are local walks to be had offering good views of the coast, and all amenities are close by in Ulverston ( a lovely, small but lively market town)."

"As expected from the website, cosy and very quiet. The duvet was too warm for us, we asked for another and got one, the young lady was very pleasant."

"This was a perfect place for our get away to the Lakes. Although it is on the edge of the lake district it is in a lovely location surrounded by rolling hills and open countryside. Set in an ideal village location there is plenty to do all around. Within a few minutes you are into the traditional lakeland setting and all the well known beauty spots are within easy travelling distance. There are two lovely village pubs one of which was an awarding winning pub for food and is well worth a visit. Our hosts were warm and welcoming and the cottage was 5 star quality."
