Alston is in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This town, with its cobbled streets and nooks and crannies, was the filming location Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area. There is a host of shops in the town including crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the steam engines through the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.

"This is as nice and well equipped cottage as we have stayed in, we felt welcome as soon as we stepped inside with the treats left by Phillipa . It is situated in a good spot with nice moorland views all round. Other reviewers have already said how well equipped the cottage is and we would endorse this view just to add that our dog was welcome too with bowls towels and a supply of poo bags for anyone forgetting anything. The garden area is large and well fenced so we could sit with a coffee and let him explore, if your dog is a small wick escaper you would need to keep an eye with all the livestock around. One very nice touch that really impressed us was a lovely text after we had arrived to welcome us and enquire if everything was ok and one on the evening before our leaving to wish us a good journey home and to hope we had had a good week. To sum up a spotlessly clean superbly equipped cottage in a lovely peaceful location idea for a couple who love the country, when you look at the amount of bookings we hope we will be able to find a space to come again"

"Skelgill Rig is a lovely cottage with a large outdoor area set in beautiful, peaceful countryside. The property is maintained to a very high standard and is spotlessly clean throughout. The owner provided milk, cake and biscuits on arrival, which is a nice touch. The cottage is spacious and airy and has all the amenities you could wish for including oven, microwave, fridge, washing machine, dryer, ironing board, hairdryer etc. Towels and bed linen also provided. Dogs welcome, but not permitted upstairs. Garden is large and is adjacent to fields containing sheep and many species of birds. We particularly enjoyed watching a wood pecker visiting the bird feeder! Some very nice walks from the cottage and it is only a mile or so from Alston, so walking there and back is possible if you are mobile (although care is need on the road as there is no pavement). We walked to Alston along a footpath beside the stream at the bottom of the valley, which was stunningly beautiful; longer than the direct route along the road, but much more pleasant. The only downside for us was the fact that the beds are single (and we like a double) and, as we commented in the guestbook, we did not find them particularly comfortable. Still, overall, a wonderful cottage for a peaceful break in the countryside. We would seriously consider a return visit."
