The pretty village of Painscastle lies between the famous towns of Hay-on-Wye and Builth Wells, and takes its name from its ancient castle, where today only large earthworks remain. Standing only three miles from the England/Wales border, the village boasts a charming real ale inn and is surrounded by scenic countryside. Under six miles away is Hay-on-Wye.

"This property is a converted chapel and for that reason it has a lot of charm. The location is amazing, a great place to get away from it all. The open fire in the lounge area is a real treat. We visited as an extended family of 6. We found that the kitchen was a lovely place to socialise as it is open plan. However the lounge does not have sufficient seating for 6 people. There is no mobile signal here which was not a problem for us. There is free WiFi and the connection is fast. Overall an enjoyable stay over the new year period."

"My wife and I were looking for a cozy few days away with our two dogs and WOW this was perfect, just wish we could have stayed longer. The cottage is beautiful and ideally laid out for what we wanted. Downstairs you have the kitchen, large porch area ( Dogs can sleep there) and dinning area. There are two bedrooms downstairs and a bathroom. Ideal for walking the dogs, miles of countryside surrounds you then return to have them settle down with you in front of the woodburner while you have a drink sat at the table. Downstairs main area is flag / slate floors so again ideal with the dogs. In the evening we could bed the dogs down and go upstairs to the galleried sitting room again with open fire. The two fires and stone chimney breast which is full height is the centre piece of the house. Bedroom used was very comfy and all amenities were immaculate. Hay on wye aprox 15 mins drive away, also would recommend a trip down to Brecon. A couple of tips Take some logs etc, and make sure you have everything you need nearest shops some distance away especially if you are looking for supermarket. Quite difficult to find make sure you have route sorted before you set off, sat nav may not get you there. Route in is via single track roads all of which are good condition. As it says on the listing on Sykes there is no mobile signal. I am sure we will return"

"This is not the place to go if you like the hustle and bustle of busy life. This is a very remote property, with beautiful countryside around it. From Painscastle you cross a moorland to reach it. This was wonderful for us, as we saw tonnes of red kites flying above, and went for a couple walks along the moor. The house itself is beautifully restored, and we loved the layout of it. It's all very clean and tidy, and the owners provide towels, clean bedding, wood for the fire, as well as other things we may not have thought of being available - like spare toilet paper, salt & pepper, cleaning sprays and tin foil. There are also plates, cups and pots and pans enough for 6. We spent a great deal of our time walking in the surrounding area. Rhulen Old Chapel is a perfect base for this. We went to the National Show Caves (good - check the reviews) on one day. On the way back from this, and from Brecon Beacons (another good day out) we went through Brecon to make use of the Morrisons. There is a supermarket slightly close to the house (at Llandrindod) but this one was on our route back, and has a petrol station too. Would also recommend the Roast Ox as an excellent place to have a meal whilst staying here."
