The charming village of Hollington is in the south of the Peak District, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is a collection of traditional cottages and farmhouses surrounded by rolling countryside and offers a number of hostelries that serve fine food and ales. Nearby is the lovely town of Ashbourne, home to some wonderful examples of Georgian architecture and interesting cobbled streets and alleyways, Ashbourne itself has a good selection of restaurants and a variety of shops, including a number of antique stores. The Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by and have many outdoor pursuits on offer including walking and cycling, but for a different kind of excitement Alton Towers is a 25 minute drive away. A great holiday spot.

"The Smithy is a delightful, beautifully presented and well equipped cottage, which delighted us from the moment we arrived. The owner was friendly and welcoming making sure we knew where everything was and where the local amenities were, including the local pubs and other attractions. We thoroughly enjoyed the fundraising BBQ and pizza night at the Red Lion, as well as the lovely food of the Saracens Head. We enjoyed some lovely days exploring Illam, Chatsworth (including High Tea) and the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall, as well as catching up with friend in Derby and Nottingham. All in all we had a lovely time and hope to return before to long."

"Little quiet village of Hollington, with a handy Pub 5mins walk serving good food, was great. We visited the wonderful Chatsworth House, we found a lovely little tea room in Matclok Bath called Hollington is a small friendly village just of the main route. The local pub, The Red Lion is only 5 minutes walk, and also serves good food. We visited the glorious Chatsworth House. Found a great little tea room called "The Clock Strikes 3" in Matlock Bath, recommend a visit. Bakewell was quaint especially for "Tart Lovers" ! Nearest town is Ashbourne, a lovely town with lots to see and some lovely shops and lots of eateries. But by far the best thing about our trip was The Old Smithy itself, what a great place to come home to. Our host Philippa was welcoming, gracious and a very bubbly lady (& she greeted us with some home made cake and the means to make a cuppa before we unpacked, marvellous) Well done Philippa work cottages are a credit to you. Hollington is a little village just off the main road, it has a great pub, The Red Lion"

"We stayed here for about 7 days and loved it. The property was lovely perfect for what we wanted. The owners are very friendly and lovely people greeted us when ever we see them had a good chat. This is situated in a very good area you are able to get to everything within about 5 minute drive and about 30 Minutes to the peak. I would highly recommend staying here with out a doubt."

"The Old Smithy is very well situated for getting to all parts of the Peak District. The accommodation is very comfortable and tastefully decorated and furnished. Everything that you might need whilst self catering is provided. The outside space is an ideal area to sit in the evenings and watch the resident sheep in an adjacent field. (Neil was my favourite!!). Philippa was very welcoming and left us a delicious cake! I hope to return to stay there as soon as I can."

"It can be stressful holidaying with children but Philippa & Julian are amazing hosts and put us at ease with their relaxed & friendly hospitality! We welcomed the delicious homemade cake. The boys loved feeding the sheep, choosing fresh eggs and walking Dave the dog (not sure who took who for a walk ??)! The cottage is stunning! We loved the bath and resented sharing it with the boys! The super king size bed was amazing and the boys enjoyed having their own bathroom!! We were not disappointed by the delicious pies at the local pub which is a leisurely stroll down the road. The children's menu was excellent! We also found a great pub called The Ketch in Kniveton near Ashbourne. Great service & fabulous food! The boys enjoyed a rainy afternoon at Sticky Fingers in Ashbourne and loved being creative! They also have a huge selection of homemade cakes & a beautiful gift shop. We spent a lot of our time at Alton Towers where is was a short 30 min journey from the cottage. We definitely recommend this stunning cottage! We loved being away in this beautiful setting - thank you Philippa & Julian x "

"My wife and I had just got married and due to the nature of our arrangements we were not going on honeymoon straight away so looked at renting a cottage for a few days before and after the wedding to which we could retreat to and just relax. The Old Smithy fitted the bill perfectly. Situated in the very quiet village of Hollington near Ashbourne it was close enough to the facilities you might need , shops, restaurants etc etc but nice and peacefull for a relaxing time. Phillippa the owner is a perfect host, we were even treated to homemade sponge cake waiting for us when we arrived. Excellent. Spotless property with all the mod cons you would expect in a holiday rental."

"We really needed a getaway after a stressful December and this place hit the spot perfectly. We knew we'd dropped onto a good thing when we arrived and met Phillipa - she is fantastic, easygoing and has done a great job with the old Smithy. We had been hankering for some kick back time together and the cottage was perfect for that. The added touches of luxury - the stand alone bath, the super kingsize bed and in fact, all of the top floor, is a real oasis while downstairs is comfortable, warm and had everything we could need. We happened to have our first anniversary on the Sunday and Phillipa recommended a superb pub with great food. We also met Neil the sheep who is quote the character. It has great access to nearby walks including Dovedale which is just lovely. We will, without doubt, return. I'm saying I'd recommend it to a friend and I would, except I'm tempted to keep it to myself."

"As a couple we have stayed in numerous locations throughout the UK & Ireland. This one we would have to say was perfect in every way, one the BEST in fact. Lovely location, very welcoming owners & pets. Everything we needed was provided and we thoroughly enjoyed the scones. We found it great for travelling to many locations within the area and even beyond. We would fully recommend "The old Smithy" to all. We have had a full 10 day relaxing Holiday and have enjoyed it thoroughly."

"On arrival Phillipa the owner greeted us, very friendly and informative about the area. The Old Smithy was tatstefully decorated, the attention to detail on every level i.e. decoration, comfort and contemporary appliances was first class. It was full of character, as were the pets, which made the holiday special. Dopey Dogs, crazy cats, and serious sheep who studied every move made in the yard. Nothing too much trouble for the owners, but always discreet and non intrusive. The village pub served good food and Beer. Lovely area, plenty to see and do. Beautiful local walks, plenty of peace and quiet.. Perfick."
