Dumfries is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. Located on top of a small hill, Dumfries Museum is centred on the 18th-century windmill which stands above the town. Included are fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles, the wildlife of the Solway marshes, tools and weapons of the earliest peoples of the region and stone carvings of Scotland's first Christians. There are many buildings in Dumfries made from sandstone of the local Locharbriggs quarry.
