Allendale was once the centre of a busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. Allendale is ideally placed for access to Carlisle to the west, Hexham to the east or the Roman Wall just to the north. There are lots of walks and unspoilt villages in the surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline.

"We recently stayed at this lovely cottage in Allendale which is located less than a minutes walk from the market square and several pubs that do decent food and ales. There are also some lovely walks with the path down to the river trail only 100 yards from the front door. All the rooms are good sized (the second bedroom is huge) and tastely decorated / furnished - the owners told us that cottage has only recently been let as a holiday cottage and consequently has been redecorated throughout and largely filled with brand new furniture and equipment which was great. The piesta de resistance was the large farm house kichen which we found great for entertaining with some friends who dropped by for a couple of days. This room also has a large inglenook fireplace with a large log burner which really gives the room character and adds to an already very enjoyable room to socialise in. Highly recommended and will definitely be back next year to do some more of the great walks around the area."
"My husband and I recently stayed at Hare & Hounds House at Allendale Nr Hexham. The property was so spacious clean and everything in you could have wished for. We loved the log burning fires which were so cosy. The location is ideal for visiting surrounding areas. We found the owner so friendly and helpful. We certainly be staying there again"
