Middleham is predominantly a Georgian market town with settlements going back to the Romans. Today, it is the premier northern centre for the training of race horses and has almost 500 thoroughbreds in training in the vicinity. Many can be seen on their early morning gallops. Middleham came to prominence for its association with Richard III who lived in the local castle and the town is well known for its connections with the king - The Richard III Hotel and Public Bar are within 50 yards of the cottage and the remains of the castle and the former priory are also close by. Middleham is ideally situated for exploring the northern dales and is well situated for heading off to Durham, Newcastle, Harrogate, Leeds and York.

"Stone croft cottage is in a lovely village with great pubs, lovely food and lots of racehorses! We spent a great week at the cottage. It is well set out, lovely and homely but with all the mod cons you need. The log fire was great and we loved the kitchen, the beds had crisp white linen on and were really comfortable. We took our dog Nelson and he loved laying by the fire in the evenings. The bathroom is modern with a big bath with shower over. The Tea, coffee, milk and biscuits were a welcome treat when we arrived and the fire was prepared ready for lighting. We loved everything about the cottage and also the village, Andy & Jayne made booking easy and we will definitely be returning to stonecroft cottage. Loved it !! Thanks Andy & Jayne x"

"The cottage was full of character and was very well equipped with everything needed. It had a very nice modern bathroom which looked to be recently installed. There was a stove which was set ready for use but despite the weather not being very good the cottage was still cosy enough not to need it . There was also the nice touch of milk, t bags and biscuits supplied for a cuppa as soon as we arrived. The market square with a good choice of restaurants and tea rooms was just a 2 minute walk down a lane at the side of the cottage. The parking area at the cottage was quite tight and we were advised not to drive on down the lane as the bottom of the car might hit the ground. We did try as it would have been difficult otherwise and managed o.k but it might depend on type of car. Also a name sign outside would have been good as we were not sure if we were at the right property."

"We couldn't have asked for a better cottage to spend Christmas. The photos are good but do not do this cottage justice, it has such a warm homely feel. The size was perfect for two couples and the cottage is located very conveniently in a tiny picturesque village with 4 pubs, spoilt for choice! The village is also an excellent location for day trips through the Yorkshire Dales. The lack of online reviews had me concerned, but the guestbook located in the cottage has hundreds of lovely reviews, many from returning visitors. Highly recommend if you are looking for a peaceful break in the countryside."

"The cottage is quaint and well laid out with all the mod-cons (apart from a coffee maker!) The rooms are spacious and the furniture good. The location is perfect for getting into Middleham and to its castle. Some lovely walks around here. Only draw back - the pub 20 yards away, on the weekends very rowdy into the small hours."

"We had a lovely 4 days in this superb cottage. Travelled up on a cold November evening. Finding the cottage was not a problem, directions were excellent. Cottage was very luxurious, lovely living room with open fire, which was laid ready to light. Very soon, the cottage was warm and toasty! Kitchen was well laid out and well equipped with loads of character. Upstairs were two comfortable double bedrooms and a lovely bathroom. The cottage had wi- fi too, which was very handy. Middleham is a lovely Yorkshire village, with plenty of facilities, including 4 pubs, fish and chip shop, Chinese takeaway, and village store. We preferred to do our shopping 2 miles up the road in Leyburn, where there was a fantastic local grocery store as well as a Coop. The cottage was in a perfect location, right on the edge of the dales. We suggest a trip to Hawes, nice shops and cafes, and the Cheese factory with plenty of samples! We had a great short break in this cottage, my partner and I got engaged during our stay and would love to stay again. Many thanks for a lovely holiday!"

"Stonecroft proved to be a most comfortable cottage in the interesting small village of Middleham. As overseas visitors we enjoyed exploring the village buuldings and shops. The cottage was well supplied and most comfortable for the two couples. We found it a good base for exploring further, although this was somewhat hampered by severe flooding in and around North Yorkshire. Once we were accustomed to the parking area at the front, and how to access it, it was quite reasonable. The directions given were good, but amde more sense once we were there. The fire added to the overall experience."

"we were at the cottage only 10 minutes when the owner came to see if we had evrything we needed and explained how to work the appliances and the fire. the cottage was lovely and cosy.spotlessly clean and very welcoming. the local pubs were friendly with excellent varied priced meals.the black swan and the black bull were our favourites.excellent fish and chips from the takeaway. didnt like the parking very much as it was barely enough room for the car and was on a steep hill.you need a good hand brake."
