The pretty market town of Ellesmere with its Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings quietly nestles between the Shropshire Meres and the well-known Shropshire to Llangollen canal, in an area renowned as Shopshire's Lakeland. Steeped in history and originally fortified as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, this peaceful town boasts a lovely church with a 15th century roof and was home to Thomas Telford during the building of the canal network in the late 18th century. The town also boasts a good variety of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as an abundance of entertainment on and around the meres in the surrounding area.

Boughey's Barn

"We had organised a lovely get together with friends, when we arrived the barn was lovely, plenty of room. However we struggled on the first night to get the cooker to work, looking for any instructions or guidance anywhere but could not find any. We had waited to go in the hot tub due to advice from he owners about leaving the chemicals long enough. However when we got to the hot tub the chemical pot that was supposed to be in the tub 'at all times' was just left on the side. We tried to ask the owners about this because they only lived next door and had said 'any help we are only next door' but had no response at the door and no response from the note we left. We then had an issue on the Saturday of internet going down (internet wasn't a major issue) and a water leak through the living room ceiling. Again we tried to find the owners to ask for help but could not find them anywhere. These were little issues that on there own we would have brushed off, however some of our group left on the Sunday and finally the owners appeared so we asked them about our issues. My friend was met with a very hostile owner who did not seemed fussed by the problems we asked them about, instead they were extremely rude. We were told we had but too many people in the hot tub, at no point were we told that only 5 people could go in, when a hot tub is full and bubbling you cannot see how many seats are in it!!! and when the house sleeps 8 you expect the facilities to accommodate this!!!! There were no instructions or guidance anywhere to advise us on how many people could use it. We had been to ask for help on a number of occasions however instead of accepting that they had not explained it properly became defensive and rude. The house itself is lovely and a great place to go with a group of people. But you have to be a mind reader on how to use things in the place and no help is given when you try and ask for it."

"Perfect place for group of ladies to stay to celebrate a special birthday. Four double bedrooms, most with en suite bathrooms. Good bed linen, towels supplied, a large well equipped kitchen with a large table to sit round (for those who aren't cooking). A stone's throw from a great pub, beautiful circular walks from the house and close to the famous Meres. A gas BBQ, outdoor seating and a hot-tub all added to the fun and we were blessed with gorgeous weather which makes everything seem even better. Kind and friendly owners who are nearby and supermarket delivery found it's way with no problem. A great weekend and would happily return."

"Arrived on Monday for a mid week break and from the moment we arrived we were felt welcomed. The owners are helpful and friendly and always available to suggest areas to visit in the surroundings, which is good if your not familiar with the area. Accomadation was clean throughout and interior was outstanding. We didn't have a dog but I will be recommending to my friends with dogs as the owners accept dogs yet you would not be able to tell as the interior is so clean. Bonus was using having a superb hot tub and we will certinley be returning in August."

"Myself and my family have just returned from a wonderful weekend away at Boughey's Barn, Welshampton where we celebrated our daughters 21st birthday. The barn is very tastefully decorated, with all mod cons, a large tv, wi-fi, even an ice machine within the fridge which my children loved. The hot tub was an added bonus and we were also pleased we could take our dog, the garden was enclosed which allowed our labrador to roam freely. Enjoyed our walks by the picturesque mere, and had a delicious Sunday roast at the local pub the Sun Inn. Would highly recommend, and will visit again!"

"Boughey Barns was absolutely first class in terms of the accommodation, we were lucky to find somewhere that could fit 8 people comfortably. Although bizarre advertising as dog friendly but not allowing them upstairs? However we received a frosty reception from the moment we arrived, the host couldn't even be bothered to pop their head round to say hi despite being meters away from me. They proceeded to complain to the company that we had too many people, despite only having the 8 that we had wrote on the sign in sheet. We would have much preferred if they had came round and asked first rather than receiving a call off the company we booked through. It made us feel very awkward for the rest of the week and will definitely not be returning."
