Situated on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, the small village of Lastingham has a unique and fascinating history. A monastery was founded in 654 by St Cedd and flourished until the Danes destroyed it in the 9th century. In 1078, Stephen, the Abbot of Whitby, persuaded William I to restore Lastingham. However, Stephen and his monks left abruptly to set up a new monastery in York, leaving only the crypt and the apse of the church complete. Amazingly, the crypt has survived unaltered over the centuries. Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors, Pickering Castle, the Wheeldale Roman Road and the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples. For lovers of the Great Outdoors, there are plenty of beautiful and scenic walks leading directly from the village.

"We stayed here in September. What an amazing find. Cottage was lovely. Had everything we need and a bottle of wine was there on arrival, lovely touch. Lastingham is a quiet village but the setting, people and pub make it a lovely place to be. We had a great time and will definitely be back!! "

"This is a lovely peaceful and safe little hideaway with beautiful veiws and wonderfull walks nearby and on the moors which we really enjoyed, tastefully decorated very cosy and safe with off road parking, the owners are there if you need them just a knock away, the bottle off wine a lovely touch thankyou, if you are against the cruelty of down and feather bedding as I am or simply allergic then bring your own bedding ad I did, there is no phone signal whatsoever and Internet bad as well, not that we bother when on holiday but it's handy to keep in touch with family ect, a lamp would be nice in sitting area as overhead lights harsh at night, we brought the bedroom one in, would recommend this place as it's ideal for walkers and peace seekers and those in love with nature ect "

"The village of Lastingham is a hidden gem in the North York Moors. A lovely quiet village with an old church 'St Mary' with the 'The Blacksmiths Arms' opposite. All thats missing is a cricket pitch and village pond! The graveyard is fascinating and it was good to see the church is being used for what it was built for - Christian worship. The fairly recently renovated 'The Hayloft' was lovely accommodation to stay in, best described as cosy. Mrs Eros and I stayed there at the start of an unseasonably cold April with biting east wind and the warm of 'The Hayloft' was a joy to retire to after a day walking on the moors. The premises are very tastefully done with a log burning stove giving off great heat. We loved the magnificent hand-crafted artwork on one of the bedroom walls. Kitchen and bathroom have all mod cons. The front door looks out on a beck (small river or burn) with a good view to the forested hillside on the south side of the village. The bottle of wine awaiting our arrival was a nice touch and greatly appreciated. Hope to return."

"My wife and I wanted a base from which to explore the area and this was ideal. Clean and well furnished with a well equipped kitchen for self-catering. The bed was very good and there was plenty of hot water for showers etc. There was a dedicated off street parking space protected by a gate but we were able to come and go as we pleased, including slipping out for dawn photography."

"We stayed at the Hayloft for a week over Xmas 2009 and had a brilliant time ! The hosts were most welcoming and extremely helpful . We had 6 inches of snow which created a Nardiaesque theme , we went Tabogganing on the nearby slopes and it was exhilarating to return to the Hayloft and stoke up the log burning fire ! We made excursions to other villages through the snow , these made for some picturesue photo opportunities which we are sure will be just as pretty at any other time of year ! The local pub is an absolute joy and must to visit providing excellent and varied fare ! In conclusion , a stay at the Hayloft is highly recommended for a total ' Chillax ' break or weekend . The highlight for us was being able to come in from the winter chill and relax infront of the log burner ! it so added to the ambience of an already fantastic getaway location !"

"Excellent accommodation for two in a quiet and secluded village on edge of the North York Moors. Owners live next to property and are on hand if there are any problems, although we didn't have any. We planned to self-cater but village pub was so welcoming that we ate there on several nights. Very good food and they even do a fish and chip take out! It only takes 5 minutes to walk onto the moors and we managed two circular walks without needing to use the car. However, the car was needed to explore further afield. Altogether a very relaxing and enjoyable stay."

"We were greeted when we arrived and was shown round the cottage, we were very impressed. The cottage was very clean and well equipped, it had everything we needed in fact it was almost home from home. The cottage was in a very quiet village, the local pub was a 2min. walk. We shopped in the local town about 10 mins. drive. The walking was good but unfortunately the weather wasn't the best to do a lot of walking (not the fault of Sykes's) In all a very enjoyable Cottage & location. Would defiantly go back again."

"this was a lovely holiday. The house had everything you could need. The pub nearby is quite expensive and you must book if you want a meal in there although they do have a takeaway.Take a torch as the village has no lighting after dark.Lots to see and do and never have to travel far to do it either. The owners just left us in peace to get on with our holiday and gave us a nice bottle of wine on our arrival. Perfick!!"

"When we arrived, which was one day late due to family difficulties, the owner was on hand to show us round the property. We were left with a bottle of wine, the property was really lovely for 2 people, it was quiet, tucked away in a little Yorkshire village, yet minutes from the local pub. The accommodation layout was good as long as you could manage steps, as they led up to the property. Once up there it was superb, clean, tidy and decorated well. Lounge/kit/dining room had a comfy feel, while the bedroom and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. The location was ideal to visit Whitby, York, Thrisk and the Dales, it was a typical Yorkshire village with countryside and animals all around. This was our very first visit to Yorkshire and we would certainly visit again and stay in the same property. What we liked the best was the peace and quiet and yet not too far from many good places to visit. We really enjoyed our trip to York, really lovely old city, well worth a visit. If we had to say a like the least, this would be difficult, but maybe to make it clear to visitors that there is a washing machine/laundry facilities downstairs, which I would have used if I had known its existence, and also more leaflets on local places to visit would have been helpful. All in all though these little things certainly did nothing to spoil what was a really wonderful holiday experience."

"The cottage was absolutely beautiful, once we lit the woodburner the whole place was toastie and warm. We took mountain bikes and cycled from the door every day. We ate in the local pub and the food was delicious. The owner who lives infront of the property left us in peace but we called on him when ever we needed to feed the stove more wood. We couldn't have asked for anything better. I would definately go back."
