"We arrived with snow on the ground courtesy of the Beast from the East. Despite nightly frosts the central heating kept us plenty warm enough without even having to light the log burner. The cottage is in a quiet rural location with plenty of walks from the door, yet is in easy reach of local amenities and attractions. We had no problems with anything not working and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owner was extremely helpful and provided the biggest welcome pack we've ever had (even the dog was catered for). This cottage is a real bargain. Obviously for the price we weren't expecting four star luxury, but everything was fit for purpose and dog friendly. If you like peace and quiet and have dogs this is well worth considering."

"A stunning location for a quiet getaway. If you need a dog-friendly property, this works. If you don't, think twice before booking. Rich is a very talkative, animal lover who wants to be as helpful as possible. He has a passion for 4 legged creatures and their wellbeing. Credit to him. 4 pints of milk, eggs, butter, biscuits (4 packs), cereal, bread and various doggy treats were supplied in a "Welcome Pack". Soft furnishings are dated and cover a variety of decades...nothing really matches or coordinates. The kitchen is reasonably equipped and has been "interestingly" put together. Everything works, which helps. A large sunroom/conservatory is bright and welcoming. Several of the windows have blown seals and the roof sections need a good clean. Although there is a shower, it was either scolding hot or ice cold, hence unusable. Our 3 night stay didn't warrant a call to Rich and we used the bath instead. Unfortunately, there's not enough hot water for 2 baths consecutively, so we made them shallow. Towels, although provided, do not include bath sheets or a bath mat and there weren't 2 the same. All 3 bedrooms are a good size, although the 2 smaller ones have no central heating (night storage heaters, which no longer function, throughout the cottage have been replaced but not removed). The bed in the master bedroom is king size BUT someone (Rich?) has built a frame inside it so that it only accommodates a double mattress! Why?? Bedding is cheap, dated and nylon!! We didn't expect 4* hotel standards but this really was rather poor. Whilst the Welcome Pack is a nice touch, our feeling was that it would be better to spend money on the items mentioned above. Considering that up to 5 dogs are allowed, the cottage doesn't smell doggy and it's reasonably clean. A lovely wood burner in the front room helped keep things cosy, although there was a noticeable drop in temperature on the opposite side of the room due to the central heating radiator being at the same end of the room as the wood burner (?) A couple of curtains between the porch and front room and between the dining room and conservatory would help keep a more even temperature throughout (We visited in Feb, remember). Overall, money needs to be spent on the property but only small amounts would make it feel so much more cared for. You can't improve the location, it's simply stunning. If you have dogs, you know it's not always easy to find places to stay. Your dogs will love it, will you? "

"We were very impressed and pleasantly surprised by 1 Castle Cottage. The price, considering we were bringing a dog, was significantly under other local cottages, therefore we weren't expecting much. What we were met with was a charming cottage in picturesque countryside and an owner (Rich) who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Off the beaten track, it is very peaceful and we enjoyed deer, rabbits, foxes and two of the friendliest horses we've ever met. Rich left ice creams and other treats for the kids, bread, milk, cereal, eggs, butter etc, so that we could walk in and feel straight at home. What a special touch that was. A must visit is Stourhead, a National Trust property just a 7-minute drive from the cottage. The White Lion Inn down the road serves up amazing food, just be sure to book. All in all, the only issue we had with 1 Castle Orchard is that we didn't have longer there. Thanks Rich!"
