With a charter granted in 1262, the traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This lovely town is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, as well as for other activities such as theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. The town is just 18 miles from Penrith and so makes an excellent base from which to explore the cathedral city of Carlisle, the North Lakes and the natural beauty of the West Cumbrian Coast. The epic Roman construction, Hadrian's Wall, is within 25 miles, whilst the Scottish borders and their famous town of Gretna Green are within easy driving distance.

"Immaculate - kitchen facilities with aga were second to none. Huge table and it was nice for the eight of us to sit down together for a meal. Loads of animals for the children to see and feed. Owners were very laid back and friendly - nothing was too much trouble for them. Difficult to gauge the size of the rental but it was huge. Outside space was excellent with comfy seating whilst relaxing in the sun.Good access to the lakes and many other activities."

"lovely owners, friendly, helpful and laid-back, great source of info on things to do and the best way to get there. The cottage was huge, with 5 adults, 3 children and 2 dogs, space was certainly not a problem. We especially loved the kitchen and the AGA is amazing. The cottage was clean and comfortable, unfortunately it was not cold enough for us to light the open fire which was all laid and ready to go if needed. The garden was massive, very secluded, private and super secure for the kids and dogs, lots of seating and views to die for! animals galore and bramble picking which the kids loved. Could happily have stayed forever..... looking forward to returning ASAP!"

"This was avery spacious and comfortable place to stay which was exactly what we expected of a country cottage and more. The addition of it being located on a working farm enhanced our stay. The owners were friendly and helpful and nothing was abother to themand the free range eggs they supplied beautiful and stright from the nest. An all round joy of a stay"

"We all stayed here for New Year Eve and loved it. The farmer and his wife were real helpful and made sure we were comfy in the cottage. It is attached to the working farm with some fab animals - sheep, dogs and horses that we got to play with ;-> there is acres of land that you can go for walks in and not to far to get to other parts but i would say a car is needed!! the amenities were great could not ask for more - 2 bathrooms 3 bedrooms........the kitchen had all that was needed to live there.............. I do recommend the cottage to all......"

"A great warm and cozy farmhouse property. The kitchen was huge well stocked and the Aga a treat. BUt the jewel were the owners, nothing was too much trouble - eggs delivered and milk. But the attention they gave my boys is not forgotton - animals and tractors - a great combination."

"The agar in the kitchen was wonderful. The cottage was well equipped for all members of the family including toys for the granchildren to books and games for the adults. The granchildren adored the baby lamb which hd been born the day we arrived. The grounds were a haven tucked away which were safe for the children to explore and the farmer and his wife very hospitable. The bedrooms were roomy and well decorated. It was one of the best holidays we have had with our son and his family for a long time even though it was the height of the season and the weather wasnt that wonderful. It would be good to hsave a bigger television in the lounge but it really wasnt a major problem...even the dog had a good time. Really depends if you are looking for a farmhouse accommodation or a more up market modern property. For us it was ideal."
