The village of Northwood nestles between the Shropshire market towns of Wem and Ellesmere and consists of a handful of houses and an excellent pub with adjoining restaurant. Historic Wem has provided a central point for local trade since Saxon times and its weekly market still holds this tradition attracting visitors from across the county. The town of Ellesmere, with its medieval streets littered with Georgian and Victorian houses and half-timbered buildings, is situated just 6 miles away, amidst an area known as Shropshire's Lakeland and offers an abundance of shops, pubs and fine restaurants. Take a boat trip across the magnificent glacial mere out onto the Llangollen canal or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the picturesque Arboretum and Cremorne Gardens with its wonderful wildlife and scenic walks.

"Stayed over New Year as three families of 4. Sleeping accommodation and bathrooms were clean and spacious. Good, large kitchen would benefit from a second cooker and/or range, although this was not a major issue. Living areas were fairly small for the size of the house, but only mattered when all congregated together. Kids spent most of their time in other areas of the house. Beautiful and extensive garden, not fully secured for children or dogs. Would love to see this in the summer months. Fairly isolated position and Satnav postcode is a mile from actual location, car definitely needed. Easy key collection, no contact with the landlord during stay. Chocolates left as welcome gift. One fridge broken and a dodge chair were main maintenance issues. Overall a fabulous stay in a lovely location."

"I am utterly perplexed at some of the poor reviews!! The house is an outstanding place to stay and brilliantly situated for what has been a memorable and enjoyable holiday! The Top House is totally equipped for every need and the owner clearly cares for her customers. Beautifully clean and spacious rooms a delightful kitchen which is a great space for the family. Lovely warm and cosy lounge with a great log burner with wood provided by the owner. The outdoor space is superb and the children and our dog had great fun in the garden. A washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher provided and beds are so comfy! We would love to come back and we will recommend to anybody."

"So disappointing! The property has the potential to be outstanding, size of property, a great setting, superb gardens & proximity to great places to visit. Unfortunately other than the kitchen/dining area, we found many issues with the property: - stains on the lounge carpet - overall cleanliness of property very poor - washing up bowl a health hazard - bedding in the bedroom to the right of the stairs had not been changed - at least 30% of the crockery chipped - although a washing machine is available, advised only to use in emergencies Our disappointment & frustration is that these things are not difficult to fix, but are simply being overlooked!"

"We had a great week at top house and were extremely lucky with the weather. There were 6 adults (3 couples), a 4 year old, an infant and a dog. There was plenty of space with 2 of the rooms unused. The house had 2 high chairs and a decent cot for the baby and the master bedroom had a connected children's bedroom for our son. The house has the most amazing garden that is fairly contained which was great for our dog and son. The garden is really well maintained which is unusual for a rental and we spent lots of time sat outside using the BBQ. The kitchen is a really decent size and the doors open up so you can really enjoy the weather and garden. There are two lounges so we utilised one as a play room and it does have lots of children's toys, games & dvd's. The only downside is there is not much within walking distance. We were really unimpressed when we popped for a drink in the horse & jockey. Unfriendly, unwelcoming, poor choice. We stayed for one drink and left and wouldn't consider eating there. There are far better options in Wem (the castle) or welshampton (the sun inn). We really enjoyed our week and would definitely recommend it. "

"Great for a family get together. Facilities were good and the only criticism is the oven was too small for a large gathering, it needs to be larger and have more rings on the hob - a range would be better for that size accommodation. Besides that it was a lovely house which created the perfect atmosphere for a special family occasion."

"After a dark, rainy traffic filled Friday night drive we were greeted by a beautiful warm, friendly house with tasty coffee cakes on the table as we arrived. The first thing that struck me was the house was like the photos, countless times I have been to places that look like the Buckingham Palace online and you arrive to something more comparable to what you see on grime busters. The house was incredibly well equip with plenty of pots, pans, wine glasses, serving dishes, gravy jugs and even right down to egg cups. The house had such a homely feel with plenty of books, games, dvd's and with a trip down memory lane with the cd collection. I went through Sykes Cottages who provided a well organised seamless service. They have people available to answer any questions till late in the evening and at weekends which was great with organising the trip around work. The lady in the local pub 'The Horse and Jockey' was very friendly and helped with directions getting to the cottage as I could not get hold of the owner. When we visited on the Saturday night for food, it was okay pub grub, very quiet with only a couple of locals and with below average service which was disappointing after such fantastic experience whilst contacting them over the phone. Nonetheless it was great to have somewhere within walking distance. Slight glitches with the house were the windows and doors were terribly fitted and it was a real struggle opening and closing them. I found the owner a little abrupt when I called for extra details and to arrange key collection. The ten o'clock departure was very early, especially as they arrived to prepare the cottage dead on 10am. Overall it was a great weekend with some lovely walks nearby, a real escape to the country. The house is well capable of holding big groups of people without being either overly big or cramp. I couldn't have hoped for a more perfect place. I definitely recommend and should the occasion occur I will be returning."

"Good sized house that easily sleeps 12-13 people comfortably situated about 30 minutes drive away from centre of Shrewsbury. Big tesco about the same distance away and smaller tescos nearby. Place is well equiped and clean on arrival. Good sized lounge with large tv and dvd player. Big kitchen space with everything you would need present. Nice big garden and patio area if the weather is nice. Rooms are nice and comfortable with 4 double beds spread around the house. The only thing is that phone reception is quite low in the area so if you just want to get away, great. However, if you still need to communicate frequently then you need to go outside to get some signal or walk around the house. No Wifi in house which would be useful for people trying to plan things on laptops etc."
