The North York Moors are the largest area of open heather moorland in England and Wales, and the uplands either side of the River Esk are some of the most beautiful. By the end of summer the heather creates a pink and purple carpet stretching for miles. Aislaby sits comfortably within this idyllic setting, its sandstone cottages and old church blending into the Esk Valley with ease. Local attractions include the church of St. Hedda and the Arncliffe Woods. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park is just a short drive away, offering miles of unspoilt scenery, many walks and a variety of opportunities for observing wildlife. Slightly further afield is the historic town of Whitby, famous for its Abbey and supposedly the location where Dracula first visited Britain.

"Outside the property the view is amazing and the ground within which to stroll or play with your dog is enormous and everything one could wish for.... Inside things are a little different. The warning signs begin when washing your hands, all the soap dispensers had been diluted so that the liquid soap ejected contained far more liquid than soap. If the bed in the master bedroom was a lot more comfortable one wouldn't mind so much if one were trapped inside as was the case when the door closed and the handle stayed in your hand ( when I finally saw the owner for the first time the day before leaving he told me that guests had been complaining about this for a long time !!?!). It would have been nice had we been told that the cue ball on the snooker table was a trick ball which gave the impression of the table not being level rendering it unusable during our stay. Thankfully I'd still got ear-plugs in my toilet bag as my partner's adult daughter needed them in the second bedroom. A locked single door separates the room from the main house bearing a scribbled note on each side asking the occupant for quiet and consideration. Unfortunately children being children but below reading age and sleeping snoring adults are oblivious to the words. ( replacing the second door would help but the owner preferred to blame the guest ). At this point a list may be more appropriate.... The immersion heater in the master bedroom rattles all night. The showers in both en suites exhibit black mould ( particularly in the 2nd. ) If the fridge remains the same bring some tools in case the door refuses to close again, though the noise may be more difficult to fix. Don't expect the furnishings to be stately as another trip to the auction house could be time and money well spent. If anything should go wrong don't count on the handyman as he is only employed for 2 days a week ( and even though my partner informed the owner on the morning after the problem with the door handle ...which coincided with one of his duty days... nothing happened ). This was the only time prior to the day of leaving that I complained , quickly learning that there was little point. I'm very well travelled all over the world but have rarely felt as disappointed as on this occasion. Someone who cares far more than for the money should be let loose in the West Wing to return it , which from reviews in years past was the case, to the standard it once was."

"Have just spent a week in the West Wing (4 of us and a dog) and the only downside was having to leave it to return home. The accommodation was perfect with everything we could possible need. The uninterrupted view from the bay window was spectacular. Our dog was made very welcome and there was a meadow for him to run and chase his ball. The snooker table kept the menfolk busy for hours on end. Also recommend the local pub - The Forge - for great food and dog friendliness (but be warned meals sometimes need to be booked in advance) Thank you Richard and Mary for a truly memorable holiday."

"Well! First - the hosts: Mary and Richard are great. Friendly and genuinely sincere. They are nearby if needed, and on the one occasion we needed assistance were a great help. The location: Wow, lovely. In a cracking little village, a decent pub with good food (even a quiz if you like that sort of thing). The locals we found very friendly and entertaining too (OK, I admit, quiz night). The best thing about the particular location of West wing is the large field just down from the cottage. What a fantastic spot right on your doorstep for exercise. Our dog loved it! The views from this field are beautiful. From another aspect the location lends itself well to daytripping. A great variety of days out available from here. Don't want to go by car - no problem as there is also so much good walking to be had locally. Bridleways and quiet country roads. Plenty of local knowledge on offer from Richard and Mary if asked. The cottage: Two comfortable ensuite bedrooms, at each end of the cottage (individual privacy for two pairs of couples). The main room is the best feature. I loved the snooker table. It is a very well cared for, top quality and rare snooker table with a quality set of balls, a set of pool balls also available for novelty factor. There is a full and varied library selection to pick and choose (unless you are on a project, leave your own books at home, impossible not to find something interesting here). The view from the main room and the kitchen is lovely, looking out over the valley, and is the same view you will enjoy when venturing out the short distance to the large field. I think I have covered the main features. I should point out it is the only cottage we have returned to more than once. We like to find new places just for the variety, but this place is special. Very secure off road parking, well out of sight of the quiet village road. I recommend this cottage to my family and friends - if you are looking for a great place to go in the North East you have found it. Lastly, I suspect there will be many other great reviews of this place which will never grace a keyboard, because of people out there trying to keep the wee gem a secret! A look through the guestbook on our last stay confirms this! Stephen & Clara"

"I'm tempted to leave an awful review, because I want to make sure there is always a week available for me to go back to the West Wing! The Truth must be told, however, We spent a week with friends there, and can honestly say, not only one of the best apartments we have ever stayed in, but the owners Richard and Mary (and Buddy) were so friendly and hospitable, on site to help with any advice. Perfect for dogs, with an enclosed garden, and a field that stretches for ever. Nice dog friendly pub within easy staggering distance, and even the flippin' weather was good. One of the huge plus points, though, is even if the weather isn't good, there is the snooker table, a massive library and TV, videos, etc."

"Fell in love with this cottage. Although 'cottage' doesn't adequately describe this property. It is spacious & comfortable & feels like you really are staying in a stately home. The snooker table provides something different for everyone. It kept a 14 year old happy for best part of a week! Well equipped for a family, especially those with a dog. Lots of land to let dogs run & nice pub virtually next door. Stayed over New Year, winter views amazing, would like to stay again in summertime. Owners are nice people & very welcoming. We will be back again!!!"

"Myself and my husband are just home from a marvellous weeks stay at West Wing. Such a great place to chill out. It was quiet with outstanding views over the valley and our own private garden to sit out and enjoy the views and birdsong. The West Wing interior is very well presented, very clean and very comfortable. The bedroom we used had a kingsize four poster bed and an en suite with the best shower ever. The double bedroom at the far end of West Wing has an en suite with bath. (Can't remember if there was a shower there as well) There is a large kitchen with washing m/c, dishwasher, fridge and large freezer, everything spotless. The lounge was massive, with a leather sofa and chairs around the large bay window to take full advantage of the views. Another large area with sofa and chairs, coffee table around the telly. And a full size snooker table AND library, yes it really is that big! Another big plus for us is that it is very dog friendly. Apart from our own private garden, there is shared use of the owners 7 acre gardens and field for the dogs to run free. The owners were very friendly, they lived on site but were very low key. Aislaby village is pretty, with an excellent pub/restuarant 5 minutes walk from West Wing. Aislaby is only 5/10 minutes drive from Whitby which gives you the best of both worlds. We enjoyed our time at West Wing so much, 24 hours after returning home we booked for next year. Thank you Mary and Richard."

"We were drawn to West Wing because of the full size snooker table but the property was much more than that. With two seating areas in the huge lounge it was nice to sit in the window looking out over the garden and view of the hills beyond during the afternoon/early evening then migrate to the TV area at night. I read a novel from the huge selection of books available in 'the library' at one end of the room. The master bedroom is spacious with a comfortable four poster and en suite shower room whilst the double is smaller but very adequate with a modern whirlpool bath. The kitchen is large and well equipped with a TV which was great for our two year old granddaughter to watch CBeebies at breakfast time in the leather wing back chair which she made her own. We were very happy to return to West Wing after a day out to sit in the garden or lounge, play snooker and relax in this luxurious but very homely property. Mary and Richard, the very friendly owners, welcomed us with biscuits and milk/teabags and lovely fresh roses. The local pub in Aislaby is very nice with friendly staff and the food was excellent. Whitby is a vibrant place, very picturesque with beaches, shops and restaurants. We were blessed with a week of very good weather. We will definitely stay here again."

"We have stayed in West Wing, Beech Hill Manor and Tower cottages at aislaby but going back to the Snooker Cottage (as we like to call it) felt like going home. Russ and I were able to recharge our batteries completely. Although we booked it for the Folk week and Regatta we found we just wanted to be mainly at the cottage. Our 18 year old daughter who vowed never to go with us to Whitby again said 'count me in' when she heard I'd booked West Wing. It is spacious, comfortable and luxurious. You can just lose yourself in the beauty of the views and surrounding areas and the peace. We all loved playing snooker and pool too. We were really sad to leave. So Mary and Richard we'll be back soon. xx Sheelagh, Russ, Shelley and Stevie Weevie Leeds"

"The accommodation was absolutely first class and very well appointed throughout. It is located in a wonderful position, a short distance from the North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby and a fantastic base from which to explore. The owners were delightful and helpful in every way and the standard of cleanliness was exemplary. The dogs were safe in an enclosed garden area and this added to our relaxation and enjoyment. We would very much like to stay again in the future."

"We loved everything about the property and had a lovely holiday. The owners were friendly and helpful. The location was good for Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc and walking with the dogs. It was great for self catering, but if you wanted to eat out, a local pub doing lovely, well priced meals was a 5 min. walk away and other eateries were close at hand. Confidential For Sykes Cottages only......Not for publication.....Our only minor complaint was that the 2nd bedroom (near to the large house that they also rent out) had a connecting door and during the weekend that it was rented out there was a lot of noise early in the morning (7/8 am as they had children) and later into the evening. Possibly the door connects to the kitchen/lounge of the large house so the two properties can be rented jointly. BUT it was as if the people renting the large house were in the bedroom te sounds were so clear and a little disconcerting as if they could just open the door and walk in, although the door was locked. As the door is one end of a small walk through corridor, of about 1 meter, a solution would be to put a 2nd door at the other end of the corridor, directly into the bedroom, to muffle the sound and make it feel more private. This is not a complaint only a minor criticism that we would appreciate your passing on to Sykes."

"The West Wing had everything we needed for a perfect, relaxing holiday. From the warm welcome we received and the first glimpse of the stunning view things just got better. All the equipment we needed was provided and the thoughtful welcome pack, with the most delicious biscuits, was a lovely gesture. The 2 double en-suite bedrooms provided the perfect accommodation. The view exceeded our expectations and the wildlife in the garden provided additional entertainment. It was an easy drive into Whitby and a good base for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. You could hear the trains, but couldn't see them (that would have been a real bonus). Probably the best holiday we have had for many years and we would like to thank Richard & Mary for their hospitality."
