Caernarfon is one of the most historical towns in the United Kingdom: there are few others who can claim to have been continually inhabited since Stone Age times. Evidence of its history is most evident in the famous Caernarfon Castle, which began its construction in 1283 as a fortress, a seat of government and a home for royalty. The town itself is the site of many events and festivals throughout the year, such as the UK Strong Man Competition, the Caernarfon Festival and meetings of the North Wales Automobile Club. The Welsh Highland Railway offers trips through the region, where you can begin to fully appreciate the splendour of the region and you can take a boat out on a fishing trip from the local harbour. The town itself is well-served by restaurants and shops and its close proximity to the local beaches offer the chance to get the best of coast and country.

Bryn Morfa

"It's a real shame this property did not live up to expectations as previous reviews and pictures had us really excited for a cosy weekend just outside of Snowdonia. Unfortunately, we arrived late at night which meant it was really dark (obviously no fault of the cottage) and the cottage was really hard to find and difficult to reach. Had we been warned that the only access to the cottage was by a steep, off road track we wouldn't have booked as we only have a small car and it was very stressful to say the least. Once we eventually found the cottage we were happy to get inside and it did look as we had seen in pictures - small, cosy and relatively clean. However on arriving we closed the kitchen door only to find the handle was broken and we were then locked inside the cottage, unable to access the front door or the lobby area (luckily we had not left any of our possessions there as we were unable to reopen the door for our whole stay). We were happy to let this go - the owner was polite when we explained the situation but admitted it had been broken for a while and she hadn't fixed the problem - unfortunately we then discovered there were several other problems with the property which made our stay not very pleasant. Whilst fairly clean, the cottage was not up to the standard of the high price we had paid. There was no light bulb in the shower room, only a torch, which resulted in us showering with the bathroom door open as other wise it was pitch black (not ideal). The shower was also cold so we opted out on the second day as it wasn't worth the hassle. There was also a strong smell of damp and many of the walls and ceilings had clearly been affected, which was not very nice and just added to our disappointment. While the kitchen and living area were nice, with most of the things needed provided, we found the rest of the cottage did not reflect the high price. We had read online that the garden could be dangerous in the dark but didn't expect broken, unstable paving slabs that were impossible to see. Letting the dog out at night was a nightmare - I would recommend some outside lighting or at least fixing the steps if the property is going to be recommended to dog owners. I'm not normally one to complain, but having been so excited for a relaxing birthday weekend away I was left quite disheartened to have spent so much money on a cottage that was in all honesty not up to standard to be rented out for the price."
