The tiny village of Lastingham is a quiet haven on the edge of the North York Moors with beautiful countryside all around it. The best known building in the village is the Crypt Church of St Mary with its ancient crypt. St Cedd founded a monastery in Lastingham in the 7th Century, but it was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th Century. Pickering is seven miles away and is home to The Beck Isle Museum, which is housed in a handsome Regency property near the centre of the town. Other attractions in the town include The North Yorks Moors Steam Railway. With many castles, historic houses, abbeys, churches and other heritage sites, along with the glorious surrounding countryside, this is a tremendous base for a memorable holiday.

"What a lovely little cottage it's small & compact but got everything you need, the owner was there if you needed him but left us to our own devises. It was lovely to be able to go back at the end of our day out & sit outside with a drink listening to all the birds & the running water it's so peaceful & relaxing. Lovely quiet little village with sheep roaming around would definitely recommend to anyone (be prepared to feed the birds) & we would love to stay here again"

"No winding down needed here. As soon as I sat on the patio with a glass of wine listening to the sounds of the bubbling stream I started chilling! Although Beckside is quite a small property, it has been tastefully and cleverly planned to give it a spacious feel. It was spotlessly clean with quality furnishings. The only disadvantage we found was that the kitchen area was a little cramped for us, and whilst a microwave combination oven is adequate, we found it a little restrictive for our needs."

"A perfect cottage for two people to escape to. Great facilities in a perfect location and If you want to put on half a stone, visit the Blacksmiths Arms, a 5 minute walk away with great food and drink from very friendly hosts. Lastingham is a superb location to explore the Moors and this cottage is the place to do it from."

"this was our 2nd stay in Beckside. we had 1 week last year but booked 3 weeks this time and it was just as great. we did loads of travelling but always felt at home once back in the cottage. the time went too quickly but we have a week next year to look forward to now. Cannot fault anything. as well as all the amenities in the cottage there is also the use of the owners washing machine & dryer. Robyn & Alan are the perfect hosts. Thank you so very much for everything. The village is small & unspolit with friendly residents and the most wonderful pub. No mobile phone signal though anywhere in the village. not a problem for us though.but there is wi fi in the cottage. look forward to our return."

"We stayed here for a week and cannot fault the cottage. It is well equipped clean and comfortable. The owners are so accommodating and very welcoming. They have equipped it to a very high standard and obviously want to do the very best for their guests. We felt so at home there. In fact we really did not want to leave. The village and it's residents are very friendly. The location is good for travelling around the Moors and to York, Whitby, Scarborough and many more places of beauty and interest."

"The cottage is clean, nicely decorated and well-equipped. I have fond memories of morning coffee sitting on the bench overlooking the stream listening to birdsong. The cottage is in a superb location with moorland walks on the doorstep and a friendly village pub serving fine food."

"From the moment we were welcomed by the owner to the moment we left this was the perfect get away from it all break. The cottage was very cosy for a winter break, we could also see it as ideal for those warmer evenings, sitting outside by the beck. Although Lastingham is in a lovely quiet valley the towns of Whitby, Scarborough and Malton are all within easy reach. Walking on the Moors is accessible from the door-step,wonderful countryside to explore in all seasons as long as you are fully prepared; walking boots, etc. are essential. We hope to return in the very near future."

"I had a wonderful holiday. The cottage was in a beautiful and quiet spot - it was just a short walk from a top notch pub in what is a very pretty and peaceful village. The cottage was just the right size for my husband and I and the owner was very friendly and helpful. We found that the location was ideal as a base for exploring the moors - we found a number of very good walks, including to Rosedale Abbey and Hutton-le-Hole that started from Lastingham. I would love to go back again."

"The cottage was small but nicely appointed in all respects except for the cooking facilities. There was no proper oven and we found the combination microwave difficult to use. [Had we stayed longer we would probably have come to terms with it!]. Location superb. A lovely little village on the edge of the moors. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would use the cottage again."

"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everything we needed was in the property. The surrounding area is great for walking and site seeing. Lovely to get away from it all. The village is a few miles from the nearest shops so transport is necessary."
